Easy to Make All Natural Beauty Products
I did a webinar yesterday and had a wonderful time sharing how to make your own body care products. I first want to thank Mountain Rose Herbs and Mother Earth News Magazine for organizing and sponsoring.
I wanted everyone to see how easy it was to make basic products. Something that people have done for years or rather centuries. Egyptians, Romans, and our own Pioneers had to make their own products. Today people are making it a lifestyle choice. There are definite cost saving benefits in making your own products. You can make for pennies what you may be spending dollars on. The health benefits are also a huge reason many people are now looking for all natural products and ingredients for body care. Our skin in our largest organ so how we care for it and put on it really does make a difference, in how we look and feel.
I showed how to make nine basic body care products: cold cream, clay facial mask, lip balm, shampoo, herbal vinegar hair rinse, conditioning hair mask, bath salts, bath bombs, sugar scrub.
Here are a few recipes and remember to feel free to make them your own with your own favorite ingredients.
Basic Cold Cream
This is a simple and easy cream to create at home using 4 ingredients. You can then experiment with different oils, herbal infusions, scents and color. Even varying the about of oil, wax and water will make a difference in the final product. Just make sure to take notes so you can re-create the creams you love using!
1/8 tsp borax powder
1 /4 cup water (or herbal tea)
1 /2 cup natural oil
2 T grated beeswax or emulsifying wax
Combine the borax and water in a heat proof container. Combine the oil and wax in another heatproof container. In a water bath (pan of water on the stove top) place you containers inside and gently heat until the wax is melted and the water is hot. Pour the hot borax water in a bowl or blender. Slowly add the hot oil wax mixture stirring constantly. I use one of those hand held mixers to blend. Once mixed and creamy pour the cream into a clean jar or container and let cool completely. You may want to stir as it cools.
Yield: 8 ounces
Perfect Hair Conditioner
This is a rich hair conditioning mask that you can use once a month to keep your hair soft and radiant. I do it before shampooing. But you can also do after depending on your hair type.
1 tsp almond oil
1 tsp avocado oil
1 tsp olive oil
1 egg yolk
1 T honey
1 T fresh lemon juice
In a bowl or blender mix all ingredients until light and creamy. To use: Massage into your hair and scalp. Wrap your hair in a towel or plastic wrap and leave on for 15 minutes. Shampoo your hair as usual and rinse well.
Yield: 2 ounces
Basic Bath Bomb
Bath Bombs are so fun to make and also make excellent gifts. You can make them in all sorts of shapes, colors and scents. I like to add natural herbs such as rose, lavender, rosemary, mint and chamomile to mine for natural color. If you don't like baths you can make smaller size tablets and use in foot and hand soaks.
1 cup citric acid powder
1 cup baking soda
1 /2 cup cornstarch
1 /4 cup epsom salts
1/2 cup melted coconut oil
Optional: essential oils, dried herbs, natural colors, oatmeal
In a large bowl mix together the dry ingredients. Slowly add the melted coconut oil and stir until the mixture looks like wet sand and holds together when squeezed. Press into molds or use a bath bomb press. Place your bath bombs on a plate or towel and let sit until hard overnight. To use: Drop in a warm bath and enjoy.
Yield: 16 ounces (about 6 bombs)
